This information is for those that have signed up and plan to be at Rock Hard 11, Aug 26 -28, 2011. If you’re not going just ignore the following information.
We will be at McGill Campground, Group Site 1 above Frazier Park, CA.
Directions from Bakersfield: Get on Hwy 99 and go south. Hwy 99 will merge with I5 and continue on I5 up the Grapevine. Take the exit to Frazier Park. From the exit you will proceed on Frazier Mountain Park Rd thru Frazier Park. Stay on the road and you will reach a Y at approx 12.6 miles from I5. At the Y stay straight ahead towards Mount Pinos. Do NOT turn right towards Pine MT Club at the Y. The road will climb up and at approx. 4.4 miles past the Y you will see a sign for McGill Campground. Turn right into the Campground and follow signs to Group Site 1. You do not need to stop and pay any camping fees. The group site is paid for Friday Aug 26 to noon on Sunday Aug 28. I think that’s the checkout time but don’t hold me to it.
If you are coming from Fresno/Clovis merely take Hwy 99 to Bakersfield and follow the instructions above from Bakersfield to McGill Campground.
The price of entry gets you food, beer, drinking water, camping fees, and a couple of mementos. The mementos are priceless works of art so you will be getting quite the bargain.
You will need to bring all your campgear including a campchair for sitting around the fire. Although there are outhouses there is no running water so bring 2 – 3 gallons of water per person for cleanup etc. Bring your Solar Shower loaded if you’ve got one. Bottled water for drinking will be available. Also if you have room bring a bundle or two of firewood.
Obviously you should also bring your hash lanyard and whistle. The area also has a number of good mountain bike trails so bring your bike if you’re so inclined. The campground is a couple of miles from near the top of Mt. Pinos where many stargazers gather on the weekend. Bring your binoculars if you want to get an idea why they gather there.
The food plan starts with breakfast Saturday morning so grab something for yourself on the way up for Friday night. The beer plan definitely starts Friday night so get up there for Happy Hour if you can. The weather is expected to be daytime highs in high 70’s and nightime lows near 50. Bring a sweatshirt or jacket.
Cell phone reception in the area near the campground is spotty at best. You may have to resign yourself to being absent from electronic social networking for the weekend. There will be plenty of opportunities for actual face to face social networking!
Looking forward to seeing ya’ll!
On On to RHH 11!
